She speaks openly about the company’s ambitions for Starlink, her interplanetary dreams, and how she sees her role as an industry leader. At one point during the interview, when an engine fires in the background, she doesn’t hold back her amazement… READ MORE

Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX, announced as Satellite Executive of the Year and Northrop Grumman’s Mission Extension Vehicle-1 named as Satellite Technology of the Year
Rockville, MD – April 5, 2021 – Via Satellite, the most trusted publication in the space and satellite industry, announced Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO of SpaceX as the 2020 Satellite Executive of the Year, and Northrop Grumman’s Mission Extension Vehicle-1 (MEV-1) as the 2020 Satellite Technology of the Year on April 5 during a digital ceremony, part of the SATELLITE 2021 Conference. The winners were chosen through a combination of votes from the community and the Via Satellite editorial team.
The awards take on extra significance this year, as the global pandemic in 2020 added a layer of complexity beyond business models and revenue generation for companies. The two winners are outstanding examples of the very best of the space and satellite industry.
The Satellite Executive of the Year winner is chosen for their durable contributions to the global satellite markets, technologies, business practices, services, innovations, or any combination of the aforementioned. Gwynne Shotwell, previous winner of the award in 2017 now becomes the second two-time winner along with Matt Desch (Iridium).
“In 2020, SpaceX launched a record number of missions, transported people to the International Space Station, and launched a huge number of Starlink satellites,” said Mark Holmes, Via Satellite Editorial Director. “Even by SpaceX’s standards, it was truly amazing year. It is a company that is redefining our sector, and Shotwell is integral to this. There are no doubts she is fully deserving once again to the Satellite Executive of the Year for 2020.”
The Satellite Technology of the Year is awarded to a company whose product creates clear, significant cost-savings or technical efficiencies, makes a profit, improves quality of life, disrupts the market, and demonstrates a scientific breakthrough. The Mission Extension Vehicle-1 (MEV-1) is widely recognized as the harbinger signaling the beginning of the age of in-orbit servicing.
“In-orbit satellite servicing not that long ago seemed the stuff of science fiction,” said Holmes. “But, thanks to Northrop Grumman and its Mission Extension Vehicle-1 (MEV-1), it has now become a commercial reality. It is a stunning technology achievement and paves the way for other exciting breakthroughs in the maintenance and upgrading of satellites in the future.”
Congratulations to both winners and to all of the nominees for 2020!

SATELLITE 2021 is 40 years in the making, and despite the challenges we’ve been presented in the past year, we’re forging ahead! We recently announced that SATELLITE will now take place September 7-10, 2021 at the Gaylord National Convention Center in National Harbor, MD. I can’t begin to express how grateful we are for the understanding and flexibility of our community as we navigate the landscape created by the pandemic, and look forward to when we will all meet face-to-face again.
There has been much uncertainty throughout the pandemic and I understand that the recent shift of SATELLITE has created questions surrounding the event in September. Jenn Heinold, SVP at Access Intelligence and I recently sat down with Mark Holmes, Editorial Director of Via Satellite for an edition of Thursday Morning Conversation to discuss SATELLITE in 2021. (Side note, if you haven’t seen our Thursday Morning Conversation series, I highly encourage you to check them out!)
We’re delighted to have found a final home for SATELLITE in 2021 that is at a time that allows most of the community to be able to travel and participate, and are thrilled to be back at the Gaylord National Convention Center, where we’ve held SATELLITE before.
We can’t wait to see everyone this September for the 40th SATELLITE Conference & Exhibition! And if you haven’t registered yet, you can do so online!
All the best,
Lindsey Fuller

SATELLITE 2021: LEO Digital Forum to take place online April 6-8
Rockville, MD – March 10, 2021 – The SATELLITE Conference announces the two keynote speakers, Neil Masterson, CEO, OneWeb, and Dan Goldberg, CEO, Telesat, to speak at its upcoming LEO Digital Forum, the first major satellite event of the year taking place April 6-8 on a digital event platform.
Telesat set the industry abuzz by announcing an investment of billions of dollars in its LightSpeed LEO constellation, one of the most ambitious projects seen in the industry recently. The initial 298 satellite constellation is a major statement of intent. In his keynote presentation on Tuesday, April 6, Dan Goldberg, Telesat’s CEO, will discuss LightSpeed and why he thinks the system is destined to propel Telesat towards an exciting future.
The rise, fall, and rise again of OneWeb was one of the biggest stories in satellite last year. The company, now owned by the UK Government and Bharti Global, is looking forward to a new chapter after a headline-making and somewhat turbulent 2020. Neil Masterson, who was appointed OneWeb’s CEO in November 2020, will open the LEO Digital Forum on Wednesday, April 7 with his keynote presentation, Neil’s first public speaking engagement at a major satellite event.
“The LEO Digital Forum is the digital satellite event to attend in the first half of 2021,” said Mark Holmes, Satellite Group Content Director. “In addition to the CEOs from OneWeb and Telesat, the speaker line-up features CEOs from SES, Eutelsat, Hughes and Iridium, plus end user customers Air Canada, Maersk, and OmniAccess. This program will set the stage for conversations to continue at the in-person SATELLITE Conference in July.”
The LEO Digital Forum is part of the SATELLITE 2021 conference program, and the full agenda can be viewed here.
