The satellite community has worked for many years to diversify its workforce, but it has not been an easy task. STEM education programs helped attract a much-needed new wave of young professionals into aerospace careers, but access to advanced science and math education programs is still far from universal. This session will explain the benefits of achieving broader gender, race, wealth, and geographical diversity in classrooms and boardrooms. Speakers will also address the need for greater diversity in space entrepreneurship and what investors can do to open the doors to potentially overlooked space tech startups.

One of the most complicated processes satellite owners experience in mission planning is the implementation of ground communication tools. At this stage, problems can manifest in several forms -- from the unification of hardware metrics collection and delivery to scaling the solution to include additional ground sites. In this session, speakers will reveal the intricacies of well-designed APIs and ground system software, and how satellite owners can avoid burdensome implementations when planning the ground communications aspect of their mission.

Satellite modems are at the focal point of the fusion of many core technologies that will have a transformative impact on architectures and industry business models. Evolutionary changes in SATCOM network architectures are coming from two main directions: Digitization and Virtualization. Digitization refers to replacing the L-band Intermediate Frequency (IF) interfaces with Internet Protocol (IP) based digital samples i.e., digital IF. Virtualization refers to the abstraction of computing resources from the specific hardware to create a virtual computing environment. In this session, attendees will learn more precisely how digitization and virtualization can benefit their networks.  Speakers will also explain how the emergence of technologies digital IF standards and advances in network function virtualization.

Autonomous, on-board processing capabilities for satellites create a multitude of benefits for future space missions. AI, for example, can be used to calculate optimized satellite fleet re-configurations as needed. However, AI applications require significant on-board processing power. This session focuses on how builders and engineers are making more powerful software-defined satellites that can collect, store, and transfer massive amounts of data to and from each other, the cloud, and systems on the ground.

Modern mobile satellite services are defined by their ability to create dynamic, multi-layered IoT-rich environments at the extreme edge of human activity. Mobile industries are now so reliant on complex data and connectivity that even a minute-long lapse in service can costs millions of dollars, and put future business and lives at risk. This session aims to answer a very simple question regarding a very complicated technical challenge: how close are satellites to delivering the same at-home connectivity experience to mobile edge end-users on land, at sea, and in the air? Speakers will discuss the most significant technical challenges that remain in achieving this parity, and identify the technologies and solutions that open up the greatest opportunities for mobile service providers.

There is a critical need for high-capacity relay systems to help satellites and space stations in LEO communicate with the ground. Most of the current LEO satellites are designed to circle the earth in around 90 minutes, providing a very brief window of time during which they can communicate with the ground. This limits the amounts of data they can transmit and presents real problems for end-users who need constant connectivity and access to high-resolution imagery and data. This session will explain how new space data relay systems and service providers can help LEO operators overcome this limitation and provide more continuous connectivity for customers.

Satellite systems are critical to the warfighter today, and under ever increasing cyber attacks. While many operators take internal steps to prevent ground system/terminal vulnerabilities, as Space Policy Directive-5 recognizes, there is no industry-wide standard for cybersecurity or the sharing of cyber threat information. Launch services have come a long way in the past decade. There are more options now than ever before. Reusability has lowered prices. Multi-satellite constellations have increased demand and provided enough room in the market for disruptive startups. This year's launch executives panel will focus on how and why those paths diverged and where those paths lead. We'll also discuss the business of simultaneously launching satellites and people - as crewed space missions and commercial space tourism become more frequent and popular.

There was already a considerable amount of M&A activity among mobile satellite resellers and niche market providers before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The satellite industry also saw vertically aligned M&A, with companies acquiring technologies along the supply chain in their quest to become "one-stop shops." This panel will discuss expectations for future M&A on the horizon. Will we finally see the acquisitions of operators and manufacturers that have been predicted for years but never materialized? Will terrestrial companies look to acquire space-based assets by buying companies instead of spectrum as they plan hybrid 5G networks? Join us for this exciting debate about the potential impact of space industry consolidation.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Communications Services Project (CSP)
Global civil space agencies around the world are developing more and more commercially-led space communications capabilities for their missions, especially as more NGSO systems become available. For example, NASA is now looking to U.S. industry to develop healthy commercially-provided satcom capabilities, using radio frequency and optical systems, for near-Earth operations. The agency is formulating the Communications Services Project, which aims to better understand the current capabilities and the feasibility of integrating satcom systems into future agency missions in low-Earth orbit and eventually beyond. This session will explore this and other civil space satcom needs and partnership opportunities for commercial providers.

The days of homogenous telecommunications networks are coming to an end and satellites no longer operate in a silo. For the past decade, the satellite connectivity infrastructure has rapidly evolved into an integral piece of a larger telecoms network designed to meet the needs of an interconnected world. The SATELLITE 2021 general session features satellite connectivity industry leaders in a discussion that will address the evolution of GEO and NGSO networks, connecting new people and businesses, working with telcos/MNOs to provide 5G wireless, rebounding from COVID-19, and new software-defined technologies. Open to all attendees.
