While projects and trials have already validated satellite technology to enable key 5G use cases and important work continues in 3GPP on NTN, the jury is still out on whether 5G will really be a Network of Networks that includes satellite or whether it is just the next generation of mobile connectivity. Does 5G really need satellite? Do MNOs really care? If so, are satellite operators doing enough to make sure satellite can be part of the eco-system before 5G networks are actually deployed?

In 2019, the Australian government launched its civil Space strategy for through to 2028 with seven priority areas, and recently Australian Space Agency has begun publishing technical roadmaps for each priority area. First out of the gate is "Communications Technologies and Services", which has six "Focus Areas" where the agency considers Australian industry and research have the greatest competitive and comparative advantages. They are: LEO Satellite Services; Optical Ground Stations; Hybrid RF-Optical Comms; Reconfigurable Networks; Radios, Modems and Waveforms; SatComms Network Management Tools, and Quantum-Enabled Comms. Presented in partnership with CompTIA and the Space Industry Association of Australia, this session will answer these key questions: How might Australian, the US, and their partners collaborate to leverage Australia and the US' R&D strengths in these areas to create new products and services for end-customers? Are these the right focus areas in the post-Covid, Biden Administration era? Are there other areas - such as cybersecurity - that might be missing?

As long as there have been satellites, there have been ground systems to provide the needed link between the satellite and the end-user on Earth. Although this has not changed in the 50+ years since the dawn of the satellite era, the ground segment has undergone revolutionary changes that mirror the advancements in satellites such as High Throughput Satellites, satellites orbiting outside of geostationary orbits such as LEOs and MEOs, and CubeSats. During this session, attendees will learn: The basics of satellite ground systems, how recent technological advancements in satellites and the ground segment have made satellite communications more powerful and less expensive, and what the future may bring in terms of new markets that can be served by satellite communications as advancements unfold.

Modern mobile satellite services are defined by their ability to create dynamic, multi-layered IoT-rich environments at the extreme edge of human activity. Mobile industries are now so reliant on complex data and connectivity that even a minute-long lapse in service can costs millions of dollars, and put future business and lives at risk. This session aims to answer a very simple question regarding a very complicated technical challenge: how close are satellites to delivering the same at-home connectivity experience to mobile edge end-users on land, at sea, and in the air? Speakers will discuss the most significant technical challenges that remain in achieving this parity, and identify the technologies and solutions that open up the greatest opportunities for mobile service providers.

There is a critical need for high-capacity relay systems to help satellites and space stations in LEO communicate with the ground. Most of the current LEO satellites are designed to circle the earth in around 90 minutes, providing a very brief window of time during which they can communicate with the ground. This limits the amounts of data they can transmit and presents real problems for end-users who need constant connectivity and access to high-resolution imagery and data. This session will explain how new space data relay systems and service providers can help LEO operators overcome this limitation and provide more continuous connectivity for customers.
